Longmont Criterium - This Weekend!

Longmont Criterium - Don't Miss it
Sunday, July 15
Senior Criterium State Championship
Many of you have been watching the Tour de France every night this week. If you're like me, you've been amazed at the speed someone like Robbie McEwan, Tom Boonen, Thor Husovd, Freddie Rodriquez and yesterday even Cancellara can muster for a final sprint.

While it's time you watch in person! This weekend.... right in downtown Longmont... you can see the same dazzling speed of wheels flashing by, hear the hummm and whirrr of the bikes and feel the wind  rush past as 90+ bike racers speed past your seat racing at speeds up to 45 mph.

The race course is a .7 mile mostly flat "L" shaped course that winds through the historic neighborhood of "Old Town". Wide, smooth streets makes this a wonderful event for racers and spectators. The start/finish area is located on Coffman Street (between 4th and 5th Avenues).

The race times are spread out through the day, so I've noted the categories below where you'll be sure to see a flash of Blue Sky Velo. Come out and support the racers in downtown Longmont!

Master Men 35+ - 8:55 am - always a great race to watch (even early in the morning.... think coffee in the hand) because many of these 'masters' raced pro or cat 1 or 2 in their prime... including our own Kevin Abraham who you can see racing both the this race and the SM3 race later in the day.

Master Men 35+, 4 - 9:50 am - a new category created this year to provide 'masters' who wanted a category more appropriate to them (over 35 years old and still new to road racing). According to pre-registration info Blue Sky Velo will have at least 4 racers in this category. My money would be on Dave Jones as the one to watch for the fireworks in the final sprint.

Kids Race - 12:25 pm - at least one Blue Sky Velo tricycle (and I've heard word that there may be more) will be racing 'round the course. Keep an eye out for Beck Farrell.

Senior Mens 4 - 11:30 am - 3 of our fastest men on bikes are signed up for this race so far. Give a cheer for Lee Gerakos, our team president as he'll be surfing the pack looking for the prestigious State Champion win. This category usually has more racers than any other category, most of which are willing to take pretty much any risk to stay at the front. Not a race to miss!

Senior Mens 3 - 5:50 pm - only 2 Blue Sky'ers have signed up so for for this category, but I've heard there will be a few more coming out of mid-season retirement to put on a show for the hometown crowd. This will be a fast and furious race with a number of the best crit racers wanting to show their stuff. In fact, this is the State Championships for all the Senior Men so there'll be a lot of pushing and shoving to get a Champion's title and jersey!

Although there may be more signing up on the day of the race, so far these are the categories where you'll be guranteed to see Blue Sky Velo jerseys.

We look forward to seeing you out there.
