History of the Team

St. Vrain Velo began as the AcmeRacing.net cycling team in 2001 solely sponsored by Acme Bicycles - a local bike shop in NW Longmont. The founders were Sam Freeman and Charlie Wiesel. The idea was to form a core group of Longmont racers who could train and race together and since no such team existed in Longmont, AcmeRacing.net was founded. The goal of the team was and is to enhance the sport of cycling through grassroots racing. Six members made up that first year's team: Charlie Wiesel (cat 2 roadie), Sam Freeman (cat 3 and Expert MTB), Dave Harber (cat 3 and Expert MTB), Mike Bernhart (Expert MTB), Rick Winberg (MTB endurance racer), and David Depuy (junior MTB).

For years since 2001, the team has doubled in membership. In 2006, there were 64 team members; 2007 had over 120 members.

2008 and 2009 brought two success years of partnership with Blue Sky Cycles founded by Rob Love. In 2009 we reached a maximum size of 250 members !!!

Now, partnered with Flat Irons Bank, Digital Retirement Systems, and Brandon Dwight of Boulder Cycle Sport, we continue to forge ahead and 2010 looks to be an exciting season. Men, women, triathletes, endurance cyclists, mountain bikes, cyclocross, juniors, cruisers . . . the team has truly become the grassroots cycling community envisioned by the founders.
