BlueSkyVelo.com Website Features

Dave Kilmoyer - 7/9/2010

Homepage / Tab-bar
Wherever you are in the site, you can always click the logo to return to the home page.

Here is an example of the tab-bar, you’ll find this almost everywhere as a way to get to the different sections of the site quickly.

The rest of the homepage is actually pretty dynamic:
  • “Other News” will change over time with relevant information as it pops up. Its also where certain links will remain (like the latest link for potential new members etc.).
  • The “Latest News” actually pulls the latest BLOG write-ups on our blue sky blog http://blueskyvelo.blogspot.com. We strongly encourage folks to contribute to this as well. All you need is a Google account, and then contact one of the current Board of Director Members to get ‘invited’ to the posters list. Its super easy and he can get you started. Once you log in, and you’ve been invited, you’ll see a new link for “New Post”. Simple as that. Please help keep the rest of the group up to date on all of the cool happenings going on. (you can contact (email Dave K. - membership director)
  • The “Race Results” actually pulls the latest Top 10 results from our results database explained below.
So as you can see there are quite a few compelling reasons to check in on the home page frequently. Finally, make sure to click on “Sponsors” to read about our great sponsors who really make our experience as rich as it is... or if you need some of their contact information.

Many of the features of the blue sky velo site (either viewing or contributing content) is reserved for members. All members have an account in our team database, and can login throughout the site wherever they see this:

There is a link there if you’ve forgotten your password. The site uses sessions and will last approximately 20 minutes. Once logged in, you’ll often see a label “User:: your name” so it knows who you are, and that’s how you’ll know if you’re logged in. (plus the above link will no longer be present)

Event Calendar

The group calendar is found under the main tab-bar “CALENDAR”. This is one of our newest features and everyone is encouraged to add / view ALL organized group events, no matter how big or small.

The calendar aggregates both events and Races. Races are preceded by “Race:”. Clicking on a race will bring you to the race-results page (explained more below). If you mouse over an event, you can quickly see the event’s title. Clicking on the even will bring up its details. To add an event click the icon with the pencil in it. One must be logged in to add/edit events and participation, but the calendar is publicly viewable.

Here is the event detail view. If logged in you’ll be able to add or edit an event. Note also the Participation table below each event. This is how we will now track Volunteering through participation. Once logged in anyone can “Add participation entry” to add themselves to a list. This is a great way to let others know you’ll be attending the bigger events. Its also the ONLY way we will track volunteering. The “volunteer” events will be in the calendar, and here is where we will track who volunteered for each.

View / Edit Rider Information / Bio Information

The group rider listing is found under the main tab-bar “RIDERS”. Our club has grown no doubt about it. Its so nice to be able to get to know so many new folks, but it sure is helpful to be able to put a face to name or vice versa. Clicking on the “RIDERS” main tab-bar tab will bring you to the ‘mug shot’ page with all of our members.

You can filter the view by selecting something else under “Change View”. Clicking “Load Bio” will bring up each rider’s BIO page (which can be edited as explained below). Here also, once logged in, you’ll see two other links. “View Detailed Member List”, available only to logged in current members, brings up the active member phone and email list. This is very helpful when organizing a group or you just need to get in touch with someone. The other link “Enter / Edit Kit Order” is a special link only exposed when logged in. Most times of the year, this will bring you to team clothing order page, which is disabled when we are NOT in an order window. You CAN view the details of your last clothing order here. If we ARE in a an open ordering window, this is the link you would use to view and edit your current order.

Finally NOTE THE MISSING PICTURES !!! If you don’t have your picture up, or want to change it, send an electronic picture to photos@blueskyvelo.com (keep in mind their intended use, so get one that has your sweet mug in it! ;>) )

So, if you click on “Load Bio”, you come to this page. If you’re logged in (shown above) and you’ve clicked on your own bio, you’ll see the link “Edit Bio Info”. Here you can update your personal information as well as your address. Addresses are NOT shown on the website anywhere, and would only be used to by the Board of Directors to do a mailing if needed. Here, it looks like I need to edit my racing age :(

Races / Race-Results

Adding results: scenario 1
By far the easiest way to view/add/enter results is to go directly from the Group Calendar, and selecting a race directly. Doing so will bring to the list of those who intend to race or have raced the selected race.

Now, if logged in, you can add a new result for yourself directly for this particular selected race. Here also is where you will want to come to enter your placing if you entered the race ‘expectation’ ahead of time.

When adding/viewing/updating results, you’ll see “expectation”. Its what you consider your effort will be. “A” race is your highest priority. If unsure, there’s a simple “Yes, I intend to race it”. Putting in your expected race calendar for the season is strongly encouraged. It lets people know your intentions, and lets others know who else will be going to each event. You can go in and modify these at any time. Once a race has occurred, you can then come back and enter your result (yes, there is a 999 for if you DNF a race .... mechanical right? :0) )

Adding results: scenario 2 The Race Calendar / Race List / Results are found under the main tab-bar “RACES”. Then, click this link:

The reason is we have some ‘older results’ on this page for “waxing nostalgic”. Clicking this link will bring you to the race listing.

As you can see, you can filter by ‘race type’ and / or year. To view who has raced (with results), or intends to race (with intentions) any race, click the “Results” link on the row of the intended race.

If you’re logged in, you can add a new ‘race result’ directly on this page by selecting the “Add New Results” link here, at which point you will be presented with a form on which you will have to also pick which race, as so:

Pick your race, category, expectation, and Placing if the race has already happened.

Group Photos / Blog Posts

We have a group BLOG at http://blueskyvelo.blogspot.com. The “Latest News” actually pulls the latest BLOG write-ups on our blue sky blog. We strongly encourage folks to contribute to this as well. All you need is a Google account, and then contact any of the Board Members to get ‘invited’ to the posters list. Its super easy and he can get you started. Once you log in, and you’ve been invited, you’ll see a new link for “New Post”. Simple as that. Please help keep the rest of the group up to date on all of the cool happenings going on. (email Dave K.)

Regarding photos, we have struggled with solutions for our members to distribute photos taken at events/races. We’ve settled on the following solution for now. Some photos can be included in our blog updates, and will be naturally stored there. For other photos, I’ve written some basic code that embeds FLICKR slideshows into our website’s shell.

It works by ‘selecting’ photos that have distinct and unique tags. If you are familiar with FLICKR then you probably know how to use ‘tags’, if not, its basically a way to label each photo, or set of photos. The cool thing is that several people could upload pictures from an event to their individual FLICKR accounts, and all agree on a unique tag to use like “2008_BSV_KoppenbergRace”. The first person can email the yahoo group with your intentions, and email me with the tag name, and I’ll add it to the list. This arrangement has worked out pretty well, and is relatively easy to implement. FLICKR accounts are free for a limited amount of storage, and are cheap to expand your online storage. Also, you can get photos to someone who does have an account, and they can add them for you. The key is to have a few people agree on a unique tag. Make sure its pretty unique, and then get it to dave@kilmoyer.com to get it added to the site.
